Before releasing ‘black’ lenses there is a white model Jupiter-9 2/85 in Lytkarino
The optical scheme of Jupiter-9 2/85 was copied from Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 2/85. Surely, Sonar has much better optical performance than its younger brother.
Jupiter-9 2/85 is made of metal and glass. The focus ring rotates smoothly. During focusing the front lens does not rotate, and the rim of the case goes forward. The focus ring rotates 270 degrees. During focusing, the entire lens unit moves. Minimum focusing distance is 80 cm. Maximum coefficient for macro is 1:7.3. Lens can use standard filters with a diameter of 49 mm.
The lens has a setting ring and a preset aperture ring. The Setting ring can be one of the following fixed values: F/2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16. The preset ring rotates smoothly and this can help to specify any value of F. Also it has a DOF scale for the same values of the F. The aperture consists of 15 blades .
On the open aperture of the lens sharpness and contrast are absent This feature can be skillfully used for taking portraits. As for the ordinary purposes this lens sharpness is clearly not enough. Even closing the aperture to the value F 2.8 the expected sharpness comes.
At F/5.6 Jupiter-9 2/85 gives normal sharpness. The lens gives a little bit greenish tint.
For SLR Canon cameras this lens can be used with a conventional adapter M42-Canon EOS. The ability to focus at the infinity retains. On Nikon cameras you can use the lens with a regular adapter M42-Nikon F (КП42/N), of course with the loss of the focusing at the infinity.
The important Jupiter 9 specifications:
1) Large maximum aperture of F/2.0 and a focal distance of 85 mm, It’s easy to control the depth of the sharply depicted space.
2) The lens is quite heavy.
3) The aperture is composed of 15 blades that is perfect for portraits. Also, it gives a smooth «bokeh».
4) The lens suffers from strong spherical aberration at wide aperture settings.
5) The lens is compact It is less than a modern autofocus lens for Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1:1.8 G SWM IF.
6) The lens uses a simple single-layer enlightenment and is greatly afraid of blown highlights.
Jupiter-9 2/85 is a funny lens with strong soft effect on the fully open aperture. With aperture F/2.8 lens significantly increases its sharpness. An interesting creative lens, in particular for taking portraits.
Comments:
Arkady: Actually, you can see that at full aperture there is such a feeling that the object is not in focus. The image is not quite sharp and contrast for this lens. when you close the aperture , you can achieve sharpness and contrast, but lose the focus area blurring.
Arman: The photos are great. I want to buy this lens
Vlad: The lens differs its universal roundness, especially an older versi
Dmitry: Lens is just super. It is a pity that rushed to buy, because soon after my friend gave me it.
Maks: New lenses, especially portrait, really worth a lot of money. But with the help of old Soviet lenses, you can achieve the same effect for less sum of money.
